The Journey to the Wizard of Oz

As Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Lion see the Yellow Brick Road in the distance, they suddenly find themselves walking in a glorious meadow of poppies. The scent of these bright orange flowers is so powerful, that anyone who breathes it for a prolonged period of time falls into a deep sleep. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman are unaffected, but the Lion, Dorothy, and Toto grow more tired by the minute and then succumb to their intoxicating power.

In the film version, the poppy field is a trap set up by the Wicked Witch, but in the original book it is just one of many obstacles for them to overcome. Obstacles are a part of all myths, stories, fables, and dreams. A life without obstacles would be quite boring. Obstacles test our resolve. They test our patience. Obstacles help us to bring the power of the imagination into play.

Dorothy's Battle with the Wicked Witch

People hold and use their power in different ways. Some people hold power with intimidation. Some people acquire power as they accumulate wealth and material possessions. Some people gain positions of power through their remarkable talents. Some people become powerful leaders by touching the lives of others in amazing ways.

Traveling Through Time in Your Mind and Imagination

Revisiting the past is a naturally occurring phenomenon that happens over and over again in the course of a single day. Simple conversations about what we did or where we went immediately take us back in time. Our life if filled with symbols and touchstones from the past and they stir up memories when we see them: a blanket, a painting, a film, a restaurant, a wine glass, a special book, or a certain street can immediately connect us with past memories. Just listening to the hypnotic lyrics of a song can transport us back in time to the emotionally charged images of a former lover.

Returning to the Land of Oz

Like the Tin Woodman says, love asks that we open our hearts again and again. It asks that we let others off the hook, forgive, and let go of everything that disturbs our inner peace. Love invites us to say more of the words and do more of the things that bring us closer together.

In the charming film, Don Juan de Marco, Johnny Depp tells Marlon Brando that there are only four questions of value to ask: What is sacred? Of what is the Spirit made? What is worth living for? What is worth dying for?

Depp says, "The answer to each question is the same, LOVE!"

If Only I Had Courage, Part 2

There are many books and teachings that stress the importance of living in the present moment and keeping your focus in 'the now.' But this robs you of the richness of memory and imagination that can be harvested. The Wizard of Oz is an excellent example of this. Throughout the story, Dorothy focuses her attention on seeing the Wizard of Oz and this keeps the momentum of the story moving forward in time.

Your mind has the remarkable ability to transcend time and 'the now' is just one point in an unlimited spectrum of time, a continuum that stretches forward and back. Using the mind and imagination to creatively play in future time is one of the healthiest and most enjoyable activities you can participate in physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually.
