The Journey to the Wizard of Oz

As Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Lion see the Yellow Brick Road in the distance, they suddenly find themselves walking in a glorious meadow of poppies. The scent of these bright orange flowers is so powerful, that anyone who breathes it for a prolonged period of time falls into a deep sleep. The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman are unaffected, but the Lion, Dorothy, and Toto grow more tired by the minute and then succumb to their intoxicating power.

In the film version, the poppy field is a trap set up by the Wicked Witch, but in the original book it is just one of many obstacles for them to overcome. Obstacles are a part of all myths, stories, fables, and dreams. A life without obstacles would be quite boring. Obstacles test our resolve. They test our patience. Obstacles help us to bring the power of the imagination into play.
